    Year 1 Course Overview

    Year 1 continues to grow your child’s skills in reading, writing, and maths, while also opening the door to a broad and beautiful curriculum. With lessons in history, science, geography, nature study, art, music, and physical education, your child will enjoy a well-rounded education inspired by Charlotte Mason’s gentle and thoughtful approach.

    Because many of our resources link naturally across subjects, children make meaningful connections as they learn. Instead of teaching topics in isolation, we help families explore ideas in a way that builds understanding and brings learning to life.

      • Year 1A (Term 1 & 2) Summary

        Terms 1 and 2 focuses on developing core literacy and numeracy skills while introducing global geography, family history, and early science through practical, story-based lessons.

        English

        Daily lessons build phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, structured sentence writing, and poetry appreciation. Children practise handwriting through alphabet copywork and nursery rhyme-based italics. Literature and picture study foster vocabulary development and imagination.

        Mathematics

        Children develop number sense, place value, and basic operations. They begin exploring measurement, shapes, grouping, and early data collection using hands-on, real-life methods.

        Science & Nature Study

        A gentle chemistry introduction uses household items to explore matter, mixtures, and change. Lessons are practical, observation-based, and discussion-led.

        History & Geography

        Children journey across the continents through story-based geography lessons, exploring cultures and places. In Term 2, they explore their personal and family history through maps, interviews, and photo discussions.

        Creative Arts & Health

        Picture study, music, movement, and hands-on art activities encourage creativity and expression. Health and wellbeing topics are addressed through stories, parent-led discussions, and daily routines. Physical development is supported by short activity sessions and outdoor play.

      • Year 1B (Term 3 & 4) Summary

        Terms 3 and 4 expands on earlier learning, exploring place, belonging, and the natural world through history, nature study, writing, and local geography.

        English

        Children continue to develop reading, writing, and grammar skills. They read simple texts and extend their writing through structured sentence building, observation, narration, creative responses, and poetry appreciation. Handwriting and spelling continue with increased fluency.

        Mathematics

        Focus shifts to early multiplication and division, pattern recognition, and deeper measurement skills. Students gather and interpret data and explore time and volume through everyday tasks.

        Science & Nature Study

        Children observe habitats, life cycles, and seasonal changes in a weekly nature study. Each lesson includes storytelling, guided discussion, and simple nature journaling activities. A curated selection of picture books and short videos supports learning, adding rich, age-appropriate context.

        History & Geography

        Children explore familiar places such as zoos, cities, farms, beaches, and other natural features—making meaningful connections with their local geography. A curated picture book list reinforces key ideas through engaging stories.

        Building on the family history work from Semester A, children create a family tree of Jesus, linking Bible stories to ancient history and helping them understand the past through people and events.

        Creative Arts & Health

        Creative projects continue through nature journaling, literature-linked art, and music appreciation. Health topics are explored through daily life, while physical activity is supported by structured games, movement, and free play.
