      • Year 5 (Full Year) Summary

In English Year Five, students continue to work on developing their literacy skills. They enjoy poetry and historical fiction. Using Australian and New Zealand classic fiction for copywork, they continue practising their cursive writing. Regular dictation of world literature supports spelling and vocabulary development. They also work on sentence-level grammar, how to write topic sentences, and paragraphs. Our content-rich curriculum gives students additional comprehension and writing opportunities.

We have a read-aloud novel allocated for each term. One tells the story of a family living in colonial Australia, another tells the story of a young Aboriginal girl living in the Outback on a station, another tells the humorous story of a family in New Zealand, and then we finish off the year with the dramatic story of a bushfire hitting a local community.

Earth Science includes lessons on erosion and our changing landscape. Particle theory, mass, and matter are covered in Chemistry, and for Physics we look at light and how it works. For Biology, we learn about the structural changes in birds and how they adapt to their habitats. We also read a delightful nature journal written over one calendar year.

Australian History is the focus of our first two terms. Students learn about life in Australia before and after British settlement and how that has shaped Australia today. Our last two terms include an overview of New Zealand history.

Our Geography covers extreme weather events using living books and multimedia resources. Economics is introduced into the curriculum for the first time, and we include a simple resource looking at needs and wants. The three levels of government are covered in our Civics and Government lessons.

We also include Art and Music Appreciation courses for group study. Your child can also create artworks with our Primary Art Lessons.

Online workout classes and other resources support the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) of your child.

While we do not include a Maths program, we do provide guidance on the best ones to select and offer exclusive discounts on recommended Mathematics products.

There is an optional one-term study of Australia’s First Nations peoples’ languages through stories, videos, and activities. You will need to purchase additional resources if you wish to focus on teaching a specific language.
