• Year 2 New Syllabus

    Year 2 Course Overview

Year 2 continues to build on the literacy and numeracy foundation established in Year 1, while deepening students' understanding of the world around them. With lessons in science, history, geography, nature study, art, music, and physical education, students enjoy a literature-rich, well-rounded education inspired by Charlotte Mason’s gentle and thoughtful approach.

Many of our resources link naturally across subject areas, encouraging children to make meaningful connections as they learn. Instead of teaching subjects in isolation, we help families explore ideas through an integrated approach that fosters deep understanding and lasting curiosity.

      • Year 2A (Term 1 & 2) Summary

        English

Students strengthen their core literacy skills through phonics, vocabulary, grammar, and structured writing. Handwriting is practised using excerpts from classic Australian and New Zealand literature, while narration, copywork, and poetry appreciation help build fluency, memory, and expression.

        Mathematics

Students develop number fluency with values up to 1000, apply addition and subtraction strategies, and begin exploring grouping, sharing, and early multiplication. Concepts like measurement, fractions, and data collection are taught through hands-on, real-world activities. Weekly Living Maths links add engaging picture books and games to support understanding.

        Science & Nature Study

Weekly lessons focus on weather patterns, clouds, seasons, the moon, and stars. Children engage in nature walks, journaling, and story-based science, supported by picture books and short videos that promote observation and scientific thinking.

        History & Geography

Through story-based lessons, children explore ancient civilisations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Israel, and Persia. Weekly readings are paired with a hands-on pictorial timeline to help children understand and visualise the flow of history.

        Creative Arts & Health

Creative work includes picture study, music appreciation, and literature-based art projects. Children practise nature journaling and explore a variety of materials and techniques. Health and wellbeing are fostered through daily movement breaks, outdoor play, and family-led discussions on social and emotional topics.

      • Year 2B (Term 3 & 4) Summary

        English

Lessons continue with themes of history, the natural world, and how things are made. Students practise narration, copywork, structured composition, and poetry. Handwriting and spelling practice continue with growing fluency and independence.

        Mathematics

Students expand their understanding of multiplication and division, explore number patterns, and learn to measure time, volume, and area. They also gather, display, and interpret data using tables and graphs, making maths meaningful and applicable.

        Science & Nature Study

Children investigate the properties of light and sound, exploring how energy moves and is sensed by the body. Lessons use read-aloud stories, hands-on experiments, videos, and guided discussion prompts to develop understanding. In geography, students study continents, climate zones, seasonal changes, and the movement of the Earth.

        History & Geography

Students continue exploring early civilisations, including Ancient Greece, while also learning about significant Australians through picture books and local studies. With an optional project to deepen connection with local history.

Geography lessons include mapping, landforms, oceans, and global features, supported by narration, illustration, and workbook activities that build vocabulary and confidence in written expression.

        Creative Arts & Health

Students continue engaging with art appreciation, music, and creative projects linked to nature and literature. Physical wellbeing is supported through daily movement activities, games, and outdoor play. Health topics are explored gently through stories and day-to-day experiences.
